1975 Etchells World Champion passes away

J. Randolph Bartholomew

May, 1 1942 to June 1, 2008

We regret to announce the death of Randy Bartholomew, 1975 Etchells World Champion and friend to The Class.

Randy was the husband and best friend to Heather, loving dad to Sarah Wilkinson and great friend of son-in-law Matt as well as very proud Pop Pop of Ward and Finn.  He was the son of Laverne and the late Bill Bartholomew and brother to Ginny, Holly and Barbara.

Born in Northern New Jersey at Mountainside Hospital in Montclair to non-sailing parents, Randy lived near lakes until the age of 18 and became an accomplished self-taught dinghy sailor with his father as crew on Jet 14 and anything else that would float for 5 years.

In the late ’60’s he had success sailing Penguins at Sea Cliff YC and with Heather sailed Interclub Dinghies at Manhasset Bay YC where they dominated the fleet as a husband and wife team. He was also very successful racing E22s out of MBYC.  In the 1970s, Randy raced International One Designs (IODs) with his mother and father as crew . . .with mixed results.

Highlights of his competitive sailing career include:

1968      Team raced in Norway with MBYC team in the Princess class (26 ft boat)

1971      Winner Manhasset Bay YC Challenge Cup (Hingham, MA) with Jamie Kellner and David Aiken (sailed in Ensigns)

1972      Winner Etchells US National Championship with Horace Hagedorn and Jamie Kellner

1972      Winner Laser US National Championship (***Unusual to win both singlehanded and 3-man national championships)

1975      Winner Etchells World Championship (Marblehead, MA) with Steve Sprole (of Hard Sails) and Jamie Kellner

1975      Winner Manhasset Bay YC Challenge Cup (Long Island Sound) with John Beeman and Jamie Kellner (sailed in E22s)

1976      Newport Bermuda Race – sailed with Eric Ritter on 80’ Sparkman Stevens designed ketch, Tempest that was 1st to Finish (Cruising Club of America and the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club)

1976      Runner-up in Etchells Worlds (stopped racing competitive one-designs after this with exception of dinghy fleet at MBYC)

1978      Newport Bermuda Race - Sailed with John Thompson on INFINITY (Cruising Club of America and the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club)

1980s     Set aside racing to raise his daughter and work on his house before returning to racing in the 1990s

1995      Marion Bermuda Race – Sailed on Dick Leather on COLUMBINE with Larry Glenn as navigator, 1st to Finish (Beverly Yacht Club, Blue Water Sailing Club, and the Royal Hamilton Amateur Dinghy Club)

2002      Newport Bermuda Race (Cruising Club of America and the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club)

2005      Marion Bermuda Race – Sailed with Sam Vineyard on HAWKE, 1st in class (Beverly Yacht Club, Blue Water Sailing Club, and the Royal Hamilton Amateur Dinghy Club)

2006      Newport to Bermuda – Sailed with Larry Glenn on RUNAWAY (Cruising Club of America and the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club)

Most of all, Randy enjoyed many years cruising (always as fast as possible) on Chicanery, his 38’ C&C with his wife and family and many, many sailing friends.  In 2000, Randy also hand built his own dinghy, KELP, which he left to his grandsons Ward and Finn, so that his daughter can teach them to sail.
